Investigation of Untimely Death Under Unusual Circumstances

(2010-01-04)

The Bloomfield Police Department is investigating an untimely death under unusual circumstances.

Around 10:15 A.M., Bloomfield Police Communications received a complaint from New England Rail Road of a suspicious vehicle parked adjacent to their tracks at the end of Goodman Street, which is an unused roadway that dead-ends.  An investigating Officer located the vehicle, and upon approach, observed an unresponsive person in the vehicle and smelled the strong odor of chemicals emanating from the vehicle.  The Officer also observed what appeared to be a home-made note on the vehicle warning of hazardous materials in the vehicle.

Prior to Bloomfield Investigators being able to further investigate the scene and circumstances, the area was secured and a hazardous materials response was implemented.  A coordinated response by the Blue Hills Fire Department, the CT Department of Environmental Protection Hazardous Material Unit, the Capital Region Hazardous Material Team, and the Hartford Regional Bomb Squad confirmed that the scene was contaminated by hazardous chemicals, which required decontamination measures to be taken.

Upon the scene being made safe, the unresponsive occupant of the vehicle was presumed deceased by on-scene medical personnel.  A joint investigation by Bloomfield and West Hartford Police Detectives confirmed the victim to be an adult female in her forties reported missing from West Hartford the previous evening.  The victim will be transported to the Medical Examiners Office to determine cause of death.  Because of the nature of the investigation and undetermined cause of death, identifying information about the victim is being withheld.

The first responding police officer did not report any ill-effects of coming into contact with the hazardous materials, but received a medical check-up as a precaution; no other public-safety officials were exposed to the chemicals without protective gear.
